What is a UPI payment QR code?

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is the instant payment system used across India. A UPI QR code stores a payment link that starts with upi://pay. When a customer scans it with a UPI app, the payee UPI ID, name, amount and note are filled in automatically, so the payer only has to confirm with their PIN. Shop owners, freelancers, teachers, landlords, clubs and charities print these codes on counters, invoices, flyers and menus to get paid without sharing bank details by voice or typing mistakes.

The link is made of simple parameters: pa is the payee address (your UPI ID), pn the payee name, am the amount, cu the currency (always INR), tn a transaction note, tr a merchant transaction reference and mc the four-digit merchant category code. This generator escapes every value correctly, formats the amount with two decimals and uses error correction level M so the code stays compact and easy to scan.

Validation built in

The UPI ID must follow the name@bank pattern, the payee name is required, and an amount must be a positive number with at most two decimals. The note is limited to 50 characters because many apps cut longer text, the reference accepts letters and digits only, and the merchant code must be four digits. Any problem is shown in plain language next to the preview so you can fix it before sharing the code.

Tips before you print

Scan the finished code with a real UPI app and compare the displayed name with the one you expect, since customers rely on that name to trust the payment. Leave the amount blank for a reusable counter code, or create a new code per invoice with its own amount and reference. Print the code at least two centimetres wide with a clear border around it. Everything is generated locally, so your UPI ID never leaves your device; remember that anyone who can see the QR code can read the UPI ID inside it.

How to use

  1. Enter your UPI ID and nameType the UPI ID (for example name@bank) and the payee name that customers should see in their app.
  2. Add amount and noteOptionally set an amount in rupees, a short note and a reference for your own bookkeeping.
  3. Check the QR codeThe code updates as you type; fix any validation message shown in red.
  4. Download or copySave the QR code as PNG or SVG, or copy the upi:// link, then scan it with a UPI app to test.

Frequently asked questions

Is my UPI ID uploaded anywhere?
No. The payment link is built and the QR code is drawn locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server or stored.
Which apps can scan a UPI QR code?
Any UPI app that supports the standard payment link, such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM and most bank apps. Test the code with at least one app before printing it.
Should I add an amount?
Add an amount for a fixed invoice. Leave it empty for tips, donations or shops where the customer types the price, and the app will ask for it.
What are the transaction reference and merchant code?
The reference (tr) lets a merchant match a payment to an order. The merchant category code (mc) is a four-digit code that applies to registered merchants. Personal accounts can leave both blank.
Can I use this for currencies other than rupees?
No. UPI works in Indian rupees, so the link always contains the currency code INR.
